Over the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, employees from The Coca-Cola Company volunteered to honor his life with a day of service to local organizations and communities. In Atlanta, The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Area Command hosted 90 Coca-Cola employees and their families at our distribution warehouse. This is the fourth year that The Coca-Cola Company has selected The Salvation Army as a volunteer project site, and it marks as a kick-off to our canned food sorting and packing operations each year. Volunteers got into boxes, used pallet jacks and carted loads of heavy food for over three hours! Because of their hard work, we are able to improve our food distribution process and stock our food pantry shelves much quicker. Food collected at the 11Alive Holiday Can-A-Thon and donated through the Publix Supermarkets Food for Sharing program was inspected for quality and sorted into boxes that will be distributed throughout our 13 County region. Coca-Cola volunteers sorted over 29,000 individual cans to make up 745 boxes of food and necessities that supply our Financial Emergency Service offices. This is an estimated 22,350 lbs. of food and provides a cost savings of over $3,500 in the labor it would take for Salvation Army staff to sort all of these items! Thank you Coca-Cola Company!
Each day, The Salvation Army Financial Emergency Services Centers throughout Metro Atlanta provide emergency and life-sustaining assistance with food, clothing, rent/mortgage, utilities, school supplies and furniture to individuals and families facing a financial crisis. Our food pantries provide families and individuals with relief, offering them food to place on the table when times get hard.
Do you have a group that you would like to get involved with this type of activity? We are in search of large corporate, civic and school groups that could volunteer together to help us continue to sort and pack food at our warehouse! All volunteers should be 12 years of age or older and we are actively looking for groups that have 30 or more people! Days and times are available throughout the spring and can be scheduled with our Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Clem. Click HERE to contact Sarah and find out more details about this opportunity!
