The 11Alive Community Service Awards (CSA) honored Salvation Army volunteer Virginia Hitson as one of this year’s 11 Who Care for her service in our Gwinnett County Emergency Food Pantry and canteen (mobile feeding unit) ministry. The awards honored outstanding local volunteers who have demonstrated selfless devotion for the betterment of the community.
Virginia first began her volunteer work with The Salvation Army 28 years ago in Alabama, continuing her service in Atlanta and Lawrenceville after moving to Georgia. She is currently the director of The Salvation Army’s Emergency Food Pantry for Gwinnett County, taking on the responsibility for ensuring a balanced, wholesome diet for anxious families in need. She also volunteers her time to ring a bell at the red kettles during Christmas, help with the 11Alive Can-A-Thon, and additional distributions for the community. When disaster strikes, she is one of the first volunteers on the scene, ministering to victims with beverages, food, and comfort.
She has also received these honors for her service:
- The Salvation Army of Gwinnett County’s Volunteer of the Year Award (2010)
- President Obama’s Gold Volunteer Service Award (2012)
